WHY MONTESSORI

MMontessori-w-child.jpg

The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood.  It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive.

Focuses on Key Developmental Stages

A Montessori curriculum focuses on key developmental milestones in children between the ages of birth to six years old.   During this stage of development, children are in what Dr. Montessori called "sensitive periods". During these periods,  children absorb and learn everything from their surrounding environment.

Encourages Cooperative Play

In the Montessori classroom there is only one of everything (i.e. one Pink Tower). This encourages children to work and explore cooperatively. In this unique environment, children learn to respect one another and build a sense of community.

System is Highly Individualized to Each Student

Every child learns differently and at a different pace. The Montessori environment embodies this statement by allowing the children to work with the materials by themselves, as

this accelerates their learning experience at a comfortable pace.

This Environment Inspires Creativity

The materials in the Montessori environment allow children to explore them in different ways, broadening their creative process.  Children work at tasks for the joy of the work, allowing them to focus on the process, rather than the end result – a natural path to creativity.

Children Naturally Learn Self-Discipline

The Montessori classroom naturally teaches children self-discipline as everything in the classroom is in precise order. When children are finished with an activity, they place items back into their appropriate places which facilitates the need for an orderly environment. This refines important skills like self-discipline, concentration, self-control and motivation. This environment is like their own world where they learn how to do things by themselves for themselves.  "Help me to do it myself".  Maria Montessori

Teachers Follow The Learning Experience

Teachers in the Montessori classroom are “guides” that are there to facilitate the learning experience.  They prepare the learning environment and observe the learning process of each child.  They follow each child on their own individualized learning journey by facilitating when necessary and observing their growth.  The focus is on children learning, not on teachers teaching.

Curriculum Focused on Hands-On Learning

One of the greatest benefits of the Montessori Method, particularly during the early learning experience, is the focus on hands-on learning. The emphasis is on concrete, rather than abstract learning, as children work on activities that teach practical life, sensorial, language, math and culture.

“Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor always to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.”
